How to Prepare Your Kid For Their First Haircut
How to prepare your kid for their first haircut
I put off getting my son’s first haircut out of fear. I did not want my son to go from looking four to looking ten years old. However, I finally just went for it and am proud of my decision.
Since my son was born, I knew I wanted to keep his hair long until he was old enough to take care of it himself or decide to cut it off. Either way, I wanted to give him the option of already having healthy curly hair.
Three things that helped me prepare my son for his first curly haircut.
Number one: I Consistently wash my kid’s hair! I wash my son’s hair every week, including detangling it. I massage it very gently so as not to break or cause damage.
My son stayed still in the chair for the hairstylist during his haircut because he was used to me manipulating his hair.
Number Two: Have my child sit for “hair time” outside of washes in the bath or shower. Braiding his hair has built up his ability to sit in one place for an extended period. So, while the hair stylist was cutting his hair, he did not move, allowing her to cut it quickly and safely.
You don’t have to braid your kid’s hair, but bathing outside when they sit still will help them for the first appointment.
Number Three: Be gentle!!!! I am very gentle in all that I do with my son’s hair to prevent damage. The other important aspect of being gentle is that hair time is not traumatic. There’s not a lot of screaming and crying because there’s no pain. Of course, some crying happens in the beginning or if I’m too slow braiding, but not from pain.
My kid gets his hair done by others because of consistent, gentle hair time. I’m so happy with how the cut turned out, as it wasn’t a lot and didn’t age him.
I plan to maintain his trims and see a professional to keep his shape.
You should get your kid to see a professional at least once to establish a strong foundation and learn how to care for your child’s hair if you don’t know.
I love my hairstylist and how she engaged with my son the whole time. It was a blast, from providing water to making kid references to being very gentle and going along with his imagination.
