Four Items I Used the Most as a First-Time Mom

Looking back at the items I used the most with my first son, I realized I didn’t use much. The thing I used the most was the car seat cover, which doubles as a breastfeeding cover or just a baby cover.

  1. Car seat cover/breastfeeding cover: My favorite aspect about this cover is how it can be used in so many different scenarios. As a first-time mom, I loved how this cover was a protective screen from strangers, friends, and family. Anyone who might have wanted to see or touch my baby would stop when they saw the car seat cover.

I did not have to worry about people trying to touch my baby, getting too close, or even breathing my baby’s air. Not only did the cover act as a guard against people I didn’t want to engage with my baby, but it covered me when breastfeeding. The cover gives complete coverage, so you don’t have to worry about something slipping out or someone catching a peek from behind if you don’t want to go to some back room. I still use this cover just as much with my second child.

  1. Stroller/jogger: Although this might be a given. I thought I’d still mention it because you never know. My family is super active, and having a stroller/jogger that is just as mobile is crucial. We would take our sons on smooth paths and rough terrain, and sometimes we would take them on our workouts, so we needed a stroller that could match our active lifestyle without limits. So we love our BOBs

We have a single BOB from our first baby, and then we have upgraded to a double BOB to carry both our boys, and it is so worth it! It allows us to not only carry the boys but also our drinks, diaper bags, keys, phone, and any other thing we might want to throw in the bottom compartment.

One of my favorite parts about the bob is the full extension of the overhead cover from rain and sun. It gives full coverage so that If my son needs protection from the rain and the wind, he can get that. My oldest son, now that he is older, uses it to cover his face when he doesn’t want to engage with people who come up to him.

  1. Swing – We loved our first swing. We could put my son in it, and he would fall asleep in the swing. It was heavenly. We got a new swing, and I feel it just doesn’t function the same way, but we still use it.
  1. Blankets for swaddling – Whatever baby blankets we had in the house to swaddle our son, we used. We didn’t purchase specific swaddling blankets because, for some reason, we didn’t know about them. However, we wrapped our son whenever he would get fussy or fight his sleep, and it worked like a charm to put him to sleep. For some reason it made him feel at ease, and he would go to sleep.

Although I used other items, such as diapers and wipes, I didn’t include them because I felt that was a given. If you are a new mom wondering what items you should purchase or what things help, I hope this list helps you. Whether it is your first child or your fourth, find the items that work for you.
